Gem-minerals, water-worn and wind-blown until their beauty was revealed to man, were perhaps his earliest cherished posessions. Shining out from some gravel bed or upon the sands of sea, or desert, they early attracted him and probably became his first ornaments. Thay may have been worn before clothes. They became a part of his daily life, silent but inseperable companions of his sorrows, his hopes, his ambitions, and his final tragedy of death. The history of gems us intimately interwoven with the lives and history of famous men and women throughout the ages. Once powerful world characters brutally deprived of all other possessions and precipitously driven from their homeland have found joy and solace in their gems or in the worldly possessions for which they have been then exchanged. From time immemorial, they have been the gift of gifts.
